Massachusetts cities, towns reacting to increased COVID-19 numbers
Since Massachusetts replaced its mask order with a “mask advisory” in July 2021, COVID-19 cases have begun to increase, and the delta variant has become dominant. In recent weeks, cities and towns have begun to institute their own COVID-19 rules and regulations, and employers need to pay careful attention to remain compliant.
Rules loosened, but masks still recommended
Because of the decline in COVID-19 cases and the increase in vaccinations by spring of 2021, Massachusetts eliminated its mask order in July, replacing it with a “mask advisory” that recommends fully vaccinated individuals wear masks or face coverings when indoors if they or someone in their home has a weakened immune system or is at increased risk for severe disease from COVID-19 because of their age or an underlying medical condition.
The advisory still requires masks for all individuals on public and private transportation systems, in healthcare facilities, and in other settings hosting vulnerable populations, such as congregate care settings.
Cities, towns instituting mask mandates
By mid-September, approximately 25% of cities and towns in Massachusetts had implemented mask orders in public buildings, and 10% of them had instituted mask requirements in all indoor, public spaces. Some, such as Springfield, went as far as requiring masks in outdoor public spaces where social distancing of at least 6 feet cannot be met.
