EEOC issues proposed regulations for Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA)—passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden in late December 2022—requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for medical conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. The law went into effect on June 27, 2023, but the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) didn’t issue proposed regulations interpreting the PWFA until August 7, which may not be finalized until December 29, 2023. Let’s take a closer look at how the proposed regulations will affect employers and their obligations to provide reasonable accommodations to pregnant employees.
